Trump era to herald uncertainty for shipping
The surprise election victory of Donald Trump, and the Republican sweep of both the executive and legislative branches, heralds the beginning of a period of uncertainty for sanctions and maritime policy, in addition to his well-known antipathy towards trade deals.
But the protection of domestic shipping under the Jones Act is expected to remain unchanged.
Trump, the real-estate mogul turned reality television star, has taken an increasingly hard line on sanctions over the course of his campaign.
And with Republicans retaining control of both houses of Congress, there is a major risk that he will move to reverse sanctions easing by incumbent president Barack Obama, according to Washington lawyers who advise shipowners.
“I think there’s a big chance for Iran sanctions to come back on the US side in a big way,” said Blank Rome lawyer Stefanos Roulakis.
